Navy Nautical 10 Miler

I am a slacker. I haven't written in ages. I am sorry. Life is crazy.

Let's talk about the last race I did, shall we?

Waking up at 4:30am.
Running 11.5 miles.
Scorching Memphis summer heat and humidity.
A month of minimal running and maximum chillaxin.

And I rocked it.

Official time: 1:50:10
Pace: 9:35 (fastest- 9:29)
Overall place: 174 (out of about 525)
Age group place: 4

I was scared. When we started, I just kept saying to myself, "It's OK to walk. It's OK to go slow. It's hot. Just do your best." But, of course, there was that nagging little voice way back there saying, "No! Push it! Harder! Go!" And who won? The nagging voice, of course. I didn't walk at all, but I wouldn't use the word "run" either. More of a hobble/trot/shuffle. But whatever, my feet were moving.

There was 1 spot about 2 miles in where we circled around a tremendous horse pasture. There must have been about 30 horses in there, and they were all running around the perimeter of the pasture along side the race course. It was beautiful. Picture it: 7am, sun rising over rolling hills, horses galloping, and nothing but the sound of your feet on pavement. It was a beautiful moment (all things considered).

The spectators were great; they had hoses out and were spraying runners to help cool them down. Cheering, signs, etc. There were several long stretches that were in restricted access areas of the Navy base, so it got quite lonely and boring. And there was a group of people handing out beer at mile 10. I love them.

Here are some pictures. They make me laugh.

Around mile 2, feeling pretty good...

Around mile 10, feeling completely miserable...
(I am amazingly proud of this photo. Crooked knees, T-Rex arms, face of agony. I am so sexy.)

Finished!

Bruce, my race buddy!

Pretty sweet bling.

it's gettin' hot in hrrrr...

(Todays title is in honor of the lovely Nelly show I attended last night, as well as the scorching Memphis heat.)

The month of May was packed with amazingly fun things. Unfortunately, these fun things PLUS 90+ degree heat is not very conducive to long-distance running. So, rather than harp on the complete lack of training that has taken place over the past 3 weeks, I am going to share some pictures.

I have the Navy 10 Nautical Miler (~11.5 miles) on Sunday morning. I was thinking that registering for this race would keep me focused. Nope, wrong. I am sure I can do it, it just really wont be very pretty....

Just checking in...

Hello my friends. Sorry my entries have been so few and far between these days.

Running + Bikram is a beautiful combination of practices. I have been going to yoga about 3 times a week and running 4 times a week. I feel wonderful. I still think I am crazy for registering for the full marathon; I made a training schedule which will begin in early July. That will give me 5 months, which is exactly how long I trained for the 1/2. It is going to be very time consuming...

Lots of happy things going on in my life, and I have so much to be thankful for. I will share more as things progress.

I hope you are all feeling happy, healthy, and whole. Take care of yourselves, and make sure you are enjoying the beautiful spring sunshine!

26.2 miles = insane

I think people who run marathons are insane.
I think 26.2 miles is way too far for a person to run.
I think the human body is not meant to run that far.

So why did I just register for the St. Jude's FULL MARATHON?

Because I am crazy. 100% mental.

Here are my reasons for choosing this insane challenge:

1) I am already in good shape and have a solid running base, so why not keep the momentum going?
2) I am not getting any younger. Or any less busy. Now is the time.
3) If all else fails, I just do the 1/2 marathon route.
4) I have a few running buddies here in Memphis that have agreed to help me and keep me company on my long run days.
5) Since the race is not until December, I will have the hot, nasty summer months to just keep up my base, then I wont have to begin my serious training until the fall when the weather has settled down a bit.
6) I am crazy.
7) The race is here in Memphis, so it will be very little stress for me. I will know the route, I can train on the course, I wont have to worry about hotels or travel costs or anything, and I will have TONS of fan support (right, friends?!).

So, next challenge: run 26.2 miles.... aaaaaaaaaaand GO!

Finally, let's talk about the race, shall we?

Well, let me tell you... that whole "once school and running is done with, I will have so much time on my hands I wont know what to do with myself" thing couldnt have been more wrong! The past week was very busy, and I never got a chance to write about the race! My apologies! Now, without further ado, LETS RACE:

I got to Nashville on Friday afternoon. It was the first time I had been back since, ya know, everything. It was weird to be back. It wasnt a sad feeling, not an angry feeling... just a, feeling. So much happened in that city that changed my life. Pretty emotional return, but I was looking forward to creating new, beautiful memories there.

Saturday at 4am came quickly, and I was an antsy mess. Rachel and I got to the start line in plenty of time to take a nervous pee, stretch, and take a few pictures:

"I'm a professional stretcher..."

Bruce and I sharing some last words of encouragement.

Gettin' psyched!

I was so excited. A little nervous, but mostly excited. The moments before the race began are a blur. I know I said my "good lucks" to friends and went and did my own thing- I really wanted to do this alone. I started in corral #14, so it was a good 20 minutes after the race started until I was released. Once I started running... it was amazing... I can't even explain. I could try, but it wouldnt do the emotions justice.

The spectators were phenomenal. So much energy and a constant source of support. It was a great feeling!
I saw some hysterical posters:
-"Worst parade ever"
-A giant cut-out of Dumbledore with a sign that said "Run like you don't know who is chasing you"
-"Run like your pants are on fire"
And there were a few that really hit my heart:
-A cancer survivor holding a simple sign: "Thanks" (the race was for the American Cancer Society)
-"Where are YOU running toward?"
-"Never look back."

I felt amazing. The miles seemed to fly by. Before I knew it, I was at the 10k mark and feeling like I could conquer the world.

Smiling big!

Around mile 7, we hit the 12th South part of Nashville. This is where I lived for the last year of my time there. The memories came flooding back with vengeance: days in the park playing scrabble and drinking wine, snowball fights in the front yard, beers on the patio at 12th south taproom, popsicles at las paletas... it hit me hard. My heart began to hurt. My eyes began to swell up, and the tears fell. Then, as the emotions tried to get the best of me, I started breathing hard, which made it much harder to run. I said to myself, "Are you going to let nostalgia ruin this for you? That is the past. Leave it there. I can do this." I wiped the tears from my face, lifted my gaze ahead, looked at the mile-long hill ahead of me, and ran my heart out. I ran hard. It was a long, slow, steady incline, and I never let myself look down or back. I kept looking ahead and pushing... This was my time.

The miles rolled on. I had my watch on, and I was proud of the time I was making. Around mile 10, I began to feel exhausted. I had been hydrating along the way, but my ankles were killing me from the hills. We got to a stretch of the race where there was very little spectator support and very ugly scenery. Miles 10-12 were rough, I'll be honest.

Must... keep... running...

But then, the band at mile 12 was playing, go figure, Good Directions by Billy Currington... one of "our" favorite songs together. The nostalgia hit again. But this time, rather than feeling sad, I was filled with this insane energy and determination. It was like a wave came over me and I was completely rejuvenated. My body felt no fatigue, my heart felt no pain, and I had tunnel vision towards the finish line. I ran so fast- I probably had an easy 8 minute mile.

That last stretch over the bridge into LP field was a complete blur. Before I knew it, I was across the line and someone was handing me a medal and I was being pushed into a giant crowd of sweaty people cheering and congratulating one another. Someone handed me water, someone gave me a high five, I stopped my watch: 2:03:40... and I cried. I sobbed. I managed to call mom and tell her my time and that I had finished. I was pushed along with the crowd and just bumbled around like a lost fool. Just like that, it was done. I finished. I ran a 1/2 marathon. I ran 13.1 miles. Like, I RAN the whole thing. I didnt walk. I didnt give up. And just like that- it was over. 5 months of training. 5 months of hard work. 5 months of determination, fear, excitement, and focus. It really as a blur...

The finish line will set you free.

I found Bruce and we talked for a bit. He has been such a wonderful friend and mentor through all of this, and I am so thankful for all he has offered.

Bruce and I, UTHSC represent!

Then I found Rachel and some other friends and we kicked the fun into full gear...

Free beer? Yes, please!

Victory shots!

Re-hydrating with some PBR.

Clemson friends cheering me on and sharing a few beers!

We had a great time that afternoon celebrating. I was a sore mess- my legs felt like they had been beaten with a bag of rocks and nails. But it was worth every ibuprofen I had to pop.

So, here it is, 1 week later. I ran 3 miles with Maureen on Tuesday and it was rough, but nothing I couldnt handle. It made me realize that I really ENJOY running, and I have gained a real passion out of this challenge. Kevin got me a 1 month unlimited pass to the Bikram studio here as a "congratulations" gift- he is wonderful! It felt amazing to be back in the studio! My first class back, the teacher ended by saying "...and remember, dont ever let anyone steal your peace. namaste." How perfect. Thank you, Kevin, for reuniting me with my Bikram practice!

I bet you are just dying to ask... "So, Amy, are you going to do another?!"

The answer is a resounding Y-E-S! I am already registered for another 11 mile race on June 5th, and..... *drum roll please* I am going to run the St Jude FULL MARATHON this December. Pure insanity? You betcha! But we will save that conversation for a later date!

Well, there ya have it. Another challenge come and gone. Thank you to everyone who has read my ramblings, offered support, advice, and love over the past 5 months. I couldnt have done it without you guys. (Some shout-outs? Sure! Maureen, Andrew, Sarah, Bruce, Omar, Annie, Krista, Kevin, Kate, Rachel, Colby, Jennifer, Hudson, Val, Sally, Mom, Dad, Ellie, Kathe... the list goes on and on and on...)

And with that, I leave you with the words that got me through the hard times only to come out shining on the other side, brighter, better, stronger, and happier than ever:

Love life. Be brave.

the finish line will set you free

so if you wake up with the sunrise
and all your dreams are still as new
and happiness is what you need so bad
well, girl, the answer lies with you

This race is so much more than just a physical challenge for me. It is a symbol of the new person I have become. The past 7 months have been a long road of self-discovery, healing, and realizing where my true happiness lies. This race is the culmination of the soul-searching of the past 7 months. No, I am not done, and I still have much further to go. But I still feel that the moment I cross that finish line, it will be the definitive moment in this journey. It will be the moment I am truly free of my past, and I can confidently go forward in the direction of my dreams, my desires, my happiness, and follow where the universe leads me... I have come so far.

Well, here it is, just 5 days before the race! I am a ball of excitement and can't stop thinking about it... the anticipation is more than I can take! I am doing my best to keep my runs shorter and less intense, as I don't want to hurt myself. I want to make sure my body is healthy and restored. Still, I am realizing how addicted I have become to running- I think of only running 3 miles and I get slightly aggravated... I want to run more!

I have a wild week ahead and will be crazy crazy crazy busy, but hopefully that will make the week fly by so Friday morning will be here before I know it! I probably wont get to update before the race soooooo.... HERE GOES NOTHIN'!

I am ready...

11 mile run and 11 days left

11 mile run, WOW! I can't get over it! And the best part- it felt AMAZING! I got a little tired around mile 7, and my knees ached a little around mile 9, but nothing that couldt be overcome with a little positive self-talk. And thank you, Nate Dogg and Warren G- Retulators, for helping me through that last 1/2 mile =)

I have said it time and time again, but I cannot stress it enough- I have amazing people in my life, and this circle of inspiration is one of the most amazing feelings I have experienced. Another friend of mine, Joanie, has decided to get into running and take the ab challenge! Having someone say that I inspired them to change their life is a compliment that humbles me. I will honestly say that the changes I have made in my life are completely selfish and driven from my desire to improve my life; then to have them inspire others is above and beyond anything I could imagine. My intentions were for self-improvement, but having that grow and expand to helping others is such a great feeling! Good luck, Joan!

My friend Cirbey will be running the 1/2 Marathon next week also! And of course, Bruce and Rachel will be there as well. The excitement is building with every day! I can't wait!

Not sure if I have mentioned it, but yes, I am officially staying in Memphis for another year! Would you believe that THIS girl would grow to love and enjoy this city? So much has changed, and I am really excited for what this next year will bring! Now, just to find a roommate... help!

Now, of course I needed one more unsatisfactory run to remind me that this is still a real challenge and not something I can begin to take for granted. Todays run was, in a word, AWFUL. My iPod died after 2 song, I inhaled about 8 bugs, my head was pounding, my underwear were in complete wedgie formation and up my tush the entire time, and my stomach/intestines felt as if they were attempting to expel themselves from my body. I had the best intentions of making today a strong 5 mile run followed by abs and arms... but alas, it ends with a 2 mile desperate sprint, and some pathetic stretching. I am feeling so yucky- all I want to do is eat dinner, have a glass of wine, and go to sleep. So ya know what? That is what I am going to do. And as mad as I am for not doing what I had set out to do, at least I did something, right?

Weekend bliss

I will write more later when I get the time, but I just wanted to say that I had an amazing weekend. Running, farmers market, new clothes, napping, yummy food, a movie that blows your mind, sunshine, laughs, and endless smiles... I am so happy...

Skinny Bitch!

Um, so... I reached my WW goal weight today! I set a goal of 120 lbs, and today I got down to 119.8! I still want to lose 5 lbs as a sort of "safety net" (and because I haven't weighed 115 since high school... I just want to do it to appease my own curiosity), so I still have work to do. But still, WOW! How exciting! I am extremely proud of myself! That is a total of 18 lbs lost. Not only have I lost weight, but I have become SO much healthier, toned, and muscular. My body is different in so many ways as compared to 7 months ago when I started back on WW, and 4 months ago when I started running. I love my new lifestyle!
